August Topic – Want Good Looking Xamarin Navigation? ViewModels!

Let’s dive into Xamarin navigation basics, look at Prism concepts and then explore what a ViewModel-driven solution might look like. Victor is going to make the case that it’s the only way to adhere to the MVVM pattern.

Presented by Victor Johnson
Victor Johnson started in the mobile space as the co-founder of Playtend, a native iOS shop. His apps were featured on the App Store homepage, put on dozens of Apple curated lists (Staff Favorites, App Store Essentials, Apps For Kids, etc), were downloaded by millions of users and earned nearly $1 million in B2C App Store revenue. Following Playtend, Victor contracted at Polaris Industries where he got a crash course on Xamarin Forms and C# by Scott Colestock of Marcato Partners. Since January 2015, he has focused on building Xamarin Forms/C# solutions for cross-platform apps.

July Topic – Creating Simple Animations for Mobile with After Effects and Lottie

We’ll be walking through creating a very basic animation for your mobile project using Adobe After Effects. Then we’ll preview and export the animation using the Lottie json animation format, and show how the animation can be utilized in your app. I’m definitely not an After Effects expert, but I want to show how using it to create simple keyframe animations can enhance your projects.

Lottie is super lightweight and versatile. It can be used across Mobile, Web and Desktop. This is a good tool to have in your toolkit!

June Topic – The Future of Xamarin

For too long, Xamarin developers have been using old tools. But thanks to .NET 5 and the introduction of MAUI in .NET 6, everything is going to change!

.NET MAUI is an exciting new framework to create native iOS and Android apps in .NET using C# Hot Reload, a Fluent API syntax and the MVU architecture.

Join me in this session where we’ll discuss that new fun changes are coming for Xamarin, introduce .NET MAUI, the MVU architecture and show off the power of C# Hot Reload!

May Topic – The Flutter Clock Challenge fail. What I Learned

Encore
Recently there was a contest for the mobile development framework from Google called Flutter. I didn’t win this contest. I didn’t even submit an entry as I couldn’t get past some setup and code issues. What I did get however was 3 weeks of intense self study on Flutter reverse engineering another clock application line by line.

I came away from this experience with a ton of lessons learned that I plan to share with the audience such as:

• The Dart language and it’s peculiarities.
• Usage of the Stateless and Stateful widgets in Flutter
• How the Canvas graphics api works in Flutter including customizing graphics

Attendees will leave this session with the knowledge of the common gotcha’s in Flutter that I experienced and enough ground level knowledge of Flutter to start their own application.

April Topic – How to Bind a 3rd Party Library for Xamarin

So you’re working on a Xamarin project and found the perfect library to use. The only problem? It’s not in Xamarin! It’s not in C# but it’s in Java for Android, or perhaps it is in Swift . Dang!

Don’t feel left out and certainly don’t despair, you can still use those libraries, You just need to wrap them with Xamarin bindings.

Bindings are Xamarin’s corollary for the .NET COM interop functionality, that enables us to wrap the platform-specific libraries (Android AAR files and iOS Native frameworks) with C# code that we can use in our Xamarin applications!

We’ll introduce Bindings with some simple examples and also share some experiences wrapping more complex libraries.
