April Topic – Xamarin App Testing Using Jenkins CI pipeline with Kobiton

We will demonstrate how to use the Kobiton, Jenkins, and Git to create a CI pipeline to deliver a faster feedback loop while testing mobile applications. We’ll go over some of the problems we were trying to solve and why we needed a third party device farm (Kobiton) to elevate bottle necks in the CI pipeline.

Presented by John Prout
John Prout started his career at C.H. Robinson, and spent a little over 10 years there with around 8 in Test Automation using Microsoft Coded UI, Selenium and Protractor towards the last part of my stint there. After Joining Spok John started on the Mobile team and focused his efforts towards Appium. Helped build a framework around the mobile application that handled Android and iOS across multiple OS versions utilizing a 3rd party device farm.

Presented by Kyle Hansen
Kyle Hansen spent the last 5 years working with Coded UI, Selenium, and Appium, developing testing frameworks for web desktop, and mobile applications. Most recently focusing on mobile application testing within a Jenkins CI/CD pipeline using Kobiton. Kyle spends his free time making games, playing with google maps API’s, and breaking stuff.

February Topic – Continuous Integration using Jenkins and Xamarin

In one hour, learn how to setup a Jenkins server to do CI (continuous integration). This will be a lab-style activity, meaning you should bring your laptop and be ready to follow along – learn by doing! We’ll setup Jenkins so that it triggers automatic builds of a “Hello, World!” Xamarin app from both Git commits and a daily timer; Jenkins will keep each build as an artifact for later retrieval.

Participants should arrive at the venue with the following items completed:

Install Visual Studio Community 2017 & Xamarin
• Install Visual Studio Community 2017 or better; be able to click File > New and build and deploy a Cross-Platform Xamarin.Forms app on at least Android
• Implies that Xamarin, Android SDK, etc. is installed and configured

Install Jenkins
• Install a Jenkins master on localhost or other virtual machine and completed the post-installation setup wizard
• Follow steps at https://jenkins.io/doc/book/installing
• Recommend not using Docker unless you’re proficient with it – I’m new to it and had troubles configuring Docker to allow Jenkins to see an internet connection
• Choose the “Install suggested plugins” option
• Setup the first administrator user account for accessing the Jenkins master, and then login;
• Install Git and setup a free account on https://github.com – we will each configure a public repository on GitHub for our Hello, World! app

Presented by Kyle Estes
Kyle Estes is the Lead Data Architect for Polaris Industries where he works on the Ride Command team on mapping. He architected the CI build process and scripts that Polaris currently uses for its production Ride Command mobile apps on Android and iOS.

We’ll dive deep into the features, see App Center in action, and most importantly, show how you can use App Center to release more frequently, with higher quality, and have more fun by spending time on coding features instead of managing overhead.

August Topic – Bluetooth Low Energy for Xamarin Developers

There are a lot of wireless protocols out there for engineers and product designers to use, but what makes Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) so interesting is that it’s almost certainly the easiest way to design something that can talk to any modern mobile platform out there.  BLE is a light-weight subset of classic Bluetooth and was introduced as part of the Bluetooth 4.0 core specification.  In this session, we’ll learn about the basic building blocks of BLE and how to communicate with peripheral devices from a Xamarin app.

Xamarin in one form or another has been around for a long time.  But with the recent acquisition of Xamarin by Microsoft, it has become a critical piece in the Microsoft .NET platform.  The ability to write mobile applications for IOS/Android and Windows is now as easy as File..New Project.  Or is it?  Come join me and learn just what Xamarin is, how to get started developing applications with it in VS 2017, and how to overcome some common obstacles you may face.
